A querela entre o estatuto do invisível e os seus níveis ontológico e fenomenológico não encontra uma resposta definitiva em Merleau-Ponty. O autor não identifica totalmente o invisível com o inconsciente, remetendo o visível para a fenomenologia e o invisível para a ontologia. Merleau-Ponty não confere ao invisível uma autonomia clara. Para ele, o invisível é a «impercepção da percepção». Por sua vez, José Gil define o invisível como uma experiência além (para lá) da consciência. Assim, a percepção do invisível é uma «visibilidade segunda», o avesso do visível, o revestimento deste. A estética vê o invisível a priori. É na estética que a percepção do invisível se torna fulcral, pois é a arte que possibilita tornar o invisível visível — pois é no segundo que se denuncia o primeiro. Ora, é na dinâmica entre revelação e apagamento que as imagens duplas se estabelecem: intersticiais, intervalares, “terceiras” porque compostas – pelo gesto – pelo movimento que vai de um estado a outro.

The dispute between the status of the invisible and its ontological and phenomenological levels does not find a definitive answer in Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The author does not identify the invisible entirely with the unconscious, referring the visible to phenomenology and the invisible to ontology. Merleau-Ponty does not concede a clear autonomy to the invisible. For him, the invisible is the “imperception of perception.” José Gil, on the other hand, defines the invisible as an experience beyond consciousness. Thus, the perception of the invisible is a “second visibility,” the reverse of the visible, something that covers it. Aesthetics sees the invisible a priori. It is in aesthetics that the perception of the invisible becomes fundamental, as art allows the invisible to become visible—because the former reveals itself in the latter. So, it is in the dynamics between revelation and erasure that the double images are established: interstitial, an interval, a “third” because composed – by the gesture – by the movement that goes from one state to another.
